Pianists from Asia and Oceania will compete in Shanghai next week for
places in the semifinals of the Eighth International Franz Liszt Piano
Competition being held in Utrecht's Music Center Vredenburg in the
Netherlands.

The international selection rounds of the competition are being held in
Shanghai, Utrecht and New York. The Shanghai sessions will be at the
Shanghai Concert Hall from September 22-23.

Ten pianists from China, South Korea and Vietnam will perform some of
Liszt's greatest works, such as "Valse-Impromptu," "Valse de Bravoure"
and "Valse Melancolique" before an international jury. Some partitas that
are not so widely known will also be a requirement in the competition to
test players' techniques.

The best players will win places in the competition' semifinals in
Utrecht.

Held every three years since 1986, the International Franz Liszt Piano
Competition is one of the world's most prestigious piano competitions,
selecting talents who not only have great techniques in playing the piano
but also skills in performance. Finger skills, emotion, fluency and
proficiency are all important standards in the selection.

The competition is devoted entirely to the piano works of Liszt. And it
is also known for the thorough and professional support it offers young
musicians, such as providing tours to South Africa, Asia and America and
to cities in Europe where Liszt used to play.

"You can learn much more through study tours than simply practicing at
home," says Sun Yingdi, who won first prize at the Seventh International
Franz Liszt Piano Competition in 2005.

Sun says that he has learned more about Liszt through his two years of
touring after winning the competition. Visiting cities with different
cultures also enriched his experience.

Chinese pianists have drawn world's attention through the competition. Li
Yundi, third prize winner in 1999, and Sun have both won wide applause in
their tour performances.

Apart from the competition among young piano talents, Shanghai audiences
can also witness a great concert performed by several great piano
masters. Five judges in the competition - Quinten Peelen and Martyn Van
den Hoek from the Netherlands, Frederic Chiu from America, Muza Rubackyte
from Lithuania and Balazs Szokolay from Hungary - will perform Liszt
compositions on the Weekly Radio Broadcast Concert on September 23.
