HSK Exam - `Ocean's' sequel plays same hand

ENTERTAINMENT / Review

`Ocean's' sequel plays same hand

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-06 13:24

The third roll of the dice for George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and
their merry band of casino crooks is an almost certain winner for its
makers, a break-even deal at best for audiences.

Glittery as a Vegas Strip stage revue, smooth and smarmy as a high-roller
on the lucky streak of his life, "Ocean's Thirteen" wins back some of the
"Ocean's Eleven" charm the franchise lost amid the sputtering sequel
"Ocean's Twelve."

Yet "Ocean's Thirteen" still feels like one trip too many to the craps
table, playing the same hunches, with the outcome unimaginatively clear
from the start: Categorical victory for the rascally good guys planning a
Robin Hood-style heist, utter defeat and humiliation for the villain ( Al
Pacino).

Oh, and also obvious from the get-go: a big summer hit for distributor
Warner Bros., which pretty much had a sure bet just by rounding up its
superstar cast (minus Julia Roberts) and director Steven Soderbergh one
more time.

With jazzy, funky music reminiscent of movie scores of the 1960s, the era
that spawned Frank Sinatra's original "Ocean's Eleven," the new movie
dashes through a prologue meant to establish a fresh bond with our
mercenary gang and the honor-among-thieves motive for their latest caper.

Vegas mogul Reuben Tishkoff ( Elliott Gould), the money man of the
Ocean's Eleven crew, is bilked out of his half-interest in a swanky new
casino and hotel being opened by cutthroat Willy Bank (Pacino), who
egotistically names his joint The Bank.

Stressed into a heart attack, Reuben lies listless, waiting to die,
prompting Danny Ocean (Clooney) and Rusty Ryan (Pitt) to call out the
troops for a revenge job that will break The Bank and its owner on
opening night.

The absence of Roberts, who costarred in the first two flicks, is
dismissed with an offhand remark by Danny, while "Ocean's Twelve" co-star
Catherine Zeta-Jones also is a no-show.

Everyone else is back: Damon, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, Carl Reiner, Casey
Affleck, Scott Caan, Eddie Jemison and Shaobo Qin. Also returning is Andy
Garcia as the gang's old adversary Terry Benedict, who forges an uneasy
alliance with Danny and the boys to help nail casino rival Bank.

Ellen Barkin joins the cast as Bank's top aide, Abigail Spooner, a
character played for comic effect, a woman who seems too giddy and
insecure to serve as lieutenant to a ruthless titan.

Eddie Izzard comes on board as a new Ocean's ally, an engineering genius
whose little duel with an old school mate (Julian Sands as designer of
The Bank's invulnerable security system) is one of several subplots that
muddy the works without raising the dramatic stakes of "Ocean's Thirteen."

Another of those meandering subplots is Affleck and Caan's labor battle
on behalf of workers at a Mexican plastics factory that makes casino
dice. Another is Cheadle's brief impersonation of an Evel Knievel-type
motorcycle stunt driver. Another is David Paymer's presence as a hotel
reviewer hurled into the assignment from hell by Danny's machinations.

"Ocean's Thirteen" tries to give all of its players, old and new,
something meaningful to do. But like "Shrek the Third" with its
ever-expanding cast, too many cutthroats in the casino wind up watering
down whatever's stewing in the pot.

The movie is at its best when it lets superstars Clooney and Pitt do
their thing, mugging and wisecracking with style and the uber-confidence
that comes with knowing you're Hollywood kingpins in a game where you and
yours always have the better hand.

Damon gets a bit of a promotion with a side-story involving his
character's con-man father and another in which he dons a fake nose and
artificial pheromones to romance Barkin.

Pacino thankfully tones down his booming, bellowing bad-guy act, with
Bank coming off as a clear megalomaniac, but at least a tolerable one.

Soderbergh remains a director alternating between noble creative forays
and crass commercial successes. After the failure of last fall's
film-noir throwback "The Good German," also starring his frequent
collaborator Clooney, Soderbergh has a near-certain smash in "Ocean's
Thirteen" that will help carry him through whatever strange,
idiosyncratic experiments are next on his to-do list.

As much as Clooney and Pitt, the fictional casino itself is a key star,
with sparkling interiors created on a Hollywood sound stage and dazzling
computer-crafted images of the high-rise joint slicing into the Vegas
skyline. A series of three wafer-thin, twisting towers dozens of stories
high, The Bank seems an architectural impossibility, but it sure looks
cool.

Clooney's Danny, Pitt's Rusty and some of their cohorts bemoan how Vegas
has changed, pioneer casinos such as the Dunes and the Desert Inn
supplanted by bigger, flashier entertainment and gambling behemoths.

The same holds for "Ocean's Thirteen." Bigger and flashier than "Ocean's
Eleven," yes. Worth betting on for movie-goers? Even-odds, maybe.

At least all you'll lose is the price of a ticket and a couple of hours
time, though.

LOS ANGELES - Being the mother of Tom Cruise's baby daughter has been so
much fun that Katie Holmes tells "Entertainment Tonight" she's ready to
have more children.

"We're having the best time, it's so amazing," Holmes, 28, said of the
year she and Cruise have spent largely out of the spotlight. She gave
birth to the couple's first child, Suri, in April 2006.

"Yes, definitely," she told the TV program when asked about the
possibility of more kids. The interview airs Monday.

Cruise and his ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, have a 12-year-old son and
15-year-old daughter, and Holmes said the role of stepmother is one she
relishes.

"The kids are so sweet, they're so great with Suri and she lights up when
she sees them," she said. "We have so many kids in our house, there's
always this wonderful chatter and the great noise of kids."

The actress, who recently returned to work filming the movie "Mad Money"
with Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah, said her 44-year-old husband has
played a key role in making the transition to motherhood an easy one.

"He's a great father and so it came to no shock that when we had Suri he
was amazing with the baby," she said.

Nicole Kidman isn't 'jealous' of Katie Holmes'

(ANI)
Updated: 2007-05-30 16:28

Washington - Nicole Kidman has slammed reports suggesting that she is
jealous of the close relationship her kids share with their stepmother
Katie Holmes.

Kidman has two kids - daughter Isabel and son Connor - with ex hubby Tom
Cruise. Though the couple got joint custody of the kids when they
divorced in 2001, the two children have been living with Cruise and
Holmes.

Tabloid reports suggested that the Oscar winning actress had been furious
when Will Smith's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith had claimed that her
pal Katie Holmes was a 'great mother' to Isabel and Connor.

Now however, Kidman's rep has hit out at claims that the 'Moulin Rouge'
star was upsets, and insists that she never even took notice of what
Smith was saying.

"I doubt Nicole even saw the Jada Pinkett stuff," Contactmusic quoted
Kidman's rep, as saying.

Kidman will now be seen on the big screen in 'The Invasion', a science
fiction film in which she stars opposite blonde Bond Daniel Craig.

The movie is scheduled to hit theatres in the US on August 17, this year.

Free Chinese Lesson - US artist Schnabel wins Cannes directing prize

ENTERTAINMENT / Latest News

US artist Schnabel wins Cannes directing prize

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-05-28 09:48

US director Julian Schnabel delivers a speech after winning the Best
Director award for his film 'Le Scaphandre et le Papillon' during the
Closing ceremony of the 60th edition of the Cannes Film Festival at the
Festival Palace in Cannes, southern France.[AFP]

US painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel won the best director prize
Sunday at Cannes for his French-language tragedy "The Diving Bell and the
Butterfly."

The picture tells the true story of an Elle magazine editor left
paralysed and mute by a stroke, who bravely went on to dictate what
became an international bestseller just by blinking an eye.

An exuberant Schnabel shook the hands of each of the nine jury members
and thanked his all-French cast including lead actor Mathieu Amalric
("Munich") and a female ensemble of wives, lovers and caregivers.

"I thought I was making a movie about a paralysed guy but I realised I
was making a film about women," he said, asking the actresses to stand
for applause.

"Many times they say the problem with France is the French but that's a
lie."

Schnabel, who commands top dollar for his paintings and sculptures, said
he was stunned by the award.

"In my wildest dreams I would never believe I was here because basically
I'm just a movie fan -- I never thought I was going to be a movie
director."

The subject of the film, Jean-Dominque Bauby, was a fast-living playboy,
the toast of the Paris fashion world, until he suffered a debilitating
stroke at the age of 42.

Schnabel shows him waking up in a seaside hospital after weeks in a coma
and suffering from what a neurologist calls "locked-in syndrome" -- he is
unable to speak or move any part of his body apart from his left eyelid.

The title refers to Bauby's feeling of being trapped in his body, which
has come to resemble the airtight chamber of a diving bell, and his still
active mind, still agile as a butterfly.

He is taught to communicate using a system in which the alphabet is
recited to him and he spells out words by blinking when he hears the
letter he wants to use.

A patient publishing assistant takes his dictation for his memoir in this
way over the course of many excruciating months.

The real Bauby died 10 days after the release of the book in 1997. The
account became an international hit translated into several languages.

Many viewers wept at the premiere of the film, which has inspired a
bidding war for the international rights.

Schnabel won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice film festival in 2000 for
"Before Night Falls" set in Cuba and starring Javier Bardem.

Chinese Character - More foods, more smiles

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

More foods, more smiles

(pclady.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-05-25 09:25

The busy city life can make people uptight and depressed. And one way to
fight this is by paying more attention to the foods you eat. And the
following are some culinary suggestions to cheer you up.

1: Deep-sea fish

Experts from Harvard University say that eating more deep-sea fish can
make you feel instantly refreshed. That's because there is an Omega-3
fatty acid in the fish meat that can increase the amount of blood
serum,an anti-depression substance, to make you feel relaxed.

2: Banana

Banana is a common fruit. But few people know that it can give people an
instant boost of energy. It has a special element called alkaloid and is
also an excellent source of Vitamin B6 and tryptophan, which can help to
produce more blood serum.

3. Grapefruit

It is known that there is a great amount of Vitamin C in grapefruit,
which can stimulate the build-up of adrenalin, to help release tension in
your body.

4. Whole-wheat bread

Whole-wheat bread consists of complex carbohydrates, which can increase
the amount of blood serum in your body.

5. Spinach

Full of folic acid, this leafy green vegetable helps ease the pressure in
your body.

6 Cherry

In some western countries, cherry is known as a natural aspirin. It has a
special substance called anthocyanin which can adjust your mood and help
produce happy feelings. Some scientists even say that if people are in
bad mood, eating twenty cherries is
more effective than taking medicine.

7. Garlic

Garlic is not the first choice for people as it brings on bad breath. But
it can bring happiness. German scientists have proven that after eating
garlic, nervous people will feel relaxed and amused.

8. Pumpkin

Pumpkin is abundant in Vitamin B6 and iron, which can turn blood sugar to
dextrose. And it's the dextrose that will bring happiness to your brain.

9. Low-fat milk

Low-fat milk is full of calcium, which is the perfect soothing drink for
anxious people.

10. Chicken

British psychologists found that selenium is a good regulator to adjust
people's mood. And in our daily life, chicken is a good source of
selenium.

De Niro, Pacino to join forces for second time: report

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-05-18 09:31

In what is being billed as a pivotal moment in movie history, acting
legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are to star on screen together for
only the second time, a report said Thursday.

De Niro and Pacino, who have three Oscars between them and are widely
regarded as the finest acting talents of their generation, will appear
together for the first time since Michael Mann's 1995 classic "Heat."

Their participation in the film -- "Righteous Kill" -- was reported by
the online edition of entertainment journal Variety on the sidelines of
the Cannes Film Festival.

Avi Lerner, one of the film's co-producers, told Variety: "This is an
event in world history."

De Niro and Pacino "were in two scenes in 'Heat.'" he added. "In this
movie, they are in the whole thing together," he said.

Filming for the crime thriller will begin in August, the report said. The
film will see Pacino and De Niro playing police officers on the trail of
a serial killer.

Another co-producer, Randall Emmett, said the idea for the film
originated from the two acting legends' desire to co-star.

"They're friends, and this really all got started from that," he said.

Rock 'n' Roll: which city deserves a song?

Updated: 2007-04-28 09:00

Although the past two decades is only a very short period in China's
history, these years contain an overwhelming amount of passion,
hesitation, joy and struggle. Rock music, a young and volatile import to
China in the 1980s, subtly reflects the society's acute changes in a
unique way.

Music is one of the easiest ways to know a city and its life. But which
city deserves a song? It depends on whether it can trigger the tenderest
sentiments.

Xi'an (in Northwest China): 3,063 years old
Xu Wei (singer): 38 years old
"The City I Miss" (by Xu): 9 years old

The sun is setting in the city I miss.
Why am I always full of affection for her?
She made me happy and made me sad.
She gave me hope as well as desperation...

With a slower tempo, Xi'an, the former capital of some of China's most
prosperous dynasties like the Qin, Han and Tang, seems to lag behind the
rest of the world. But it's still known for its rich cultural and
artistic diversity -- not only its ancient tombs and relics, but also as
a cradle of young rock musicians. Big-name rockers like Zhang Chu, Xu
Wei, and Zheng Jun all hail from the city.

Learn Chinese online - Taming the Tiger

CITYLIFE / Photo Gallery

Taming the Tiger

(That's beijing)
Updated: 2007-04-09 09:44

A flight delay of more than two hours is never a good way to start a
holiday. However, the prospect of a nine-day adventure tour was enough to
offset the inconvenience. Indeed, the very thought of escaping the city -
where life is predictably unpredictable - for lands truly unknown
produced an unfamiliar sense of real excitement.

As a long-term resident of China, I've grown accustomed to risk, and so I
signed up for a Tiger Leaping Gorge tour. Our flight arrived in Kunming,
the sub-tropical capital of Yunnan in southeast China, late at night. The
next morning our party of 11 traveled by long distance bus to Lijiang,
home of the Naxi ethnic minority.

Lijiang Old Town (officially, Dayan Old Town), founded more than 800
years ago, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with charming cobbled
streets, quaint tiled-roof buildings and red lanterns hanging from the
street lamps. That said, about one-third of the town was destroyed by an
earthquake in February 1996, and subsequently restored. Controversially,
the local government has added new sections to the "old city," a move
designed to accommodate more tourists, and one that might result in
Lijiang losing its UNESCO status.

Not far from the town itself we visited one of the must-see sites: the
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Chinese Herbal Clinic, which is in Baisha, the
ancient capital of the Naxi people. The clinic is also known as "Dr.
Ho's," after the 84-year-old Ho Shitiu, who is something of an
international celebrity. Most visitors, myself included, request an
examination. The good doctor took my pulse, had me stick out my tongue,
and inquired after my eating habits. He then prescribed a dose of
"healthy tea" and some advice: "Be happy - happiness is best medicine,
you know."

And so I left Lijiang on a natural high. The next stop - six hours by bus
- brought me higher still, up to 3,200 meters, where I entered the fabled
Shangri-La. Actually I had arrived at Zhongdian, a pleasant enough
Tibetan town that was renamed Shangri-La in 2002 to attract tourists. The
strategy seems to have worked. Like the fictional Shangri-La, Zhongdian
boasts a medieval monastery, known locally as the Ganden Sumtseling
Gompa, perched high above the town. The monastery was razed during the
"cultural revolution" and subsequently rebuilt. While one can take the
steep steps that lead to the monastery compound, I chose the road that
winds along the back and provides a more rewarding journey, especially on
a sunny day. Indeed, the view of the lush green pastures, distant town,
and smiling monks on their way to prayer was a reward in itself.

After returning to Zhongdian proper that evening I visited the old town,
which hosts a nightly communal dance under the stars. A word of advice:
go easy on the alcohol. At this altitude it only takes a few drinks to
knock you out. Not having had the benefit of that advice the night
before, I cured my hangover with a hearty breakfast at Noah Cafe, and
then joined the group as we set off for the most spectacular part of our
trip, Tiger Leaping Gorge. Deeper than the Grand Canyon and almost 15
kilometers long, at its narrowest point the gorge measures just 25 meters
(this is the spot where, as legend has it, a tiger once jumped across the
raging torrent to escape a hunter). Technically part of the Yangtze River
(known locally as the Golden Sands River), many a risk-taker has died
trying to navigate the rapids. The best way to follow the river is not on
it, but above it, on the hiking trail that runs the length of the gorge.

Iran TV shows footage of UK sailors

Updated: 2007-03-29 06:48

Faye Turney, 26, the only woman among the British navy personnel seized
by Iran, appears on Iranian state-run television yesterday. The footage
was broadcast by Al-Alam, an Arabic-language channel. AP

TEHERAN: Iran yesterday broadcast the first pictures of the 15 British
sailors and marines who were seized last week, including a female captive
who wore a white tunic and a black head scarf and said the British boats
had "trespassed" in Iranian waters.

Britain immediately protested the airing of the footage, saying it was
"completely unacceptable for these pictures to be shown on television".

"Obviously we trespassed into their waters," sailor Faye Turney, 26, said
on the footage broadcast by Al-Alam, an Arabic-language, Iranian
state-run television station that is carried across the Middle East by
satellite. "They were very friendly and very hospitable, very thoughtful,
nice people. They explained to us why we've been arrested, there was no
harm, no aggression," she said.

Turney, sitting in a room with a floral background, was also shown in
uniform eating with sailors and marines and at one point was shown
smoking a cigarette with eyes downcast.

"My name is Leading Sailman Faye Turney. I come from England. I have
served in Foxtrot 99. I've been in the navy for nine years," she said.

The video footage showed a brief scene of what appeared to be the British
sailors sitting in an Iranian boat in open waters immediately after their
capture.

It also showed what appeared to be a handwritten letter from Turney to
her family. The letter said, in part, "I have written a letter to the
Iranian people to apologize for us entering their waters." Turney was the
only person to be shown speaking in the video.

Chi Minh city, southern Vietnam, Monday, March 19, 2007. Jolie and her

HANOI, Vietnam - Angelina Jolie arrived in Hanoi on Monday to complete
the procedures necessary to take her adopted son Pax Thien Jolie to his
new home in the United States. The 31-year-old actress dodged reporters
on her way from the airport after flying from Ho Chi Minh City, where she
adopted the newest member of her family at an orphanage on the outskirts
of the city last week.

Jolie was expected to meet with U.S. Embassy officials Tuesday to apply
for a visa for 3-year-old Pax. Once the visa is issued, she can take him
to the United States. She was expected to leave Hanoi on Wednesday.

Jolie's oldest child, 5-year-old Maddox, who was adopted from Cambodia,
came with her to Vietnam. She also has two daughters: Zahara, 2, who was
adopted from Ethiopia, and 9-month-old, Shiloh, who was born to Jolie and
her partner, Brad Pitt, in May.

Ever since she was young she has wanted to adopt children, Jolie said in
an interview published Friday in a Vietnamese newspaper.

"Everyone would agree that children need to have a family," the paper
quoted the Oscar-winning actress as saying. "I have the ability to help
children fulfill that desire. Why should I say no?"

preparations for a "Tintin" film, the firm that owns the rights to the
celebrated animated hero.[AFP]

After 25 years of negotiations, Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks Studios has
begun preparations for a "Tintin" film, the firm that owns the rights to
the celebrated animated hero said on Thursday.

"We began negotiations with Spielberg's company 25 years ago. Three years
ago, we signed a contract with his company, Dreamworks. Last week, they
decided to enter into preproduction to make a series of 'Tintin' films,"
Moulinsart's owner Nick Rodwell said.

If it is successful, the "major production" due for 2009 or 2010 will be
the first in a series, he said at a press conference in Brussels.

Rodwell did not say which of the 23 "Tintin" adventures the film will be
based on, and he declined to specify whether it would be a movie or an
animation.

"With Harry Potter, everyone knows that there are seven films. We have 23
scenarios. If the first succeeds, the series will continue," he said.

Rodwell's wife Fanny is the widow and sole heir of Herge, the Belgian
creator of the young reporter and his faithful canine companion Snowy.

She is also the president of Studios Herge, which protects the work of
the animator, who died in 1983 and hoped that a "Tintin" film would be
made by a big name in cinema.

Learning Mandarin - First Yuezi Club opens

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

First Yuezi Club opens

(CRI)
Updated: 2007-02-27 08:59

The first yuezi club offering care to mothers who have just given birth
has just opened in Shanghai. With their astonishing prices, the services
provided by the Taiwan-based club are attracting lots of attention in the
city.

Although not common in the West, yuezi, or one month of convalescence
after childbirth, is very common for new mothers in China.

With the number of childbirths peaking since last year, it is no surprise
that the demand for professional care for new mothers is growing in
cities like Shanghai.

And the new Taiwan-owned yuezi club has attractted the most public
attention among all such services.

Residents are all curious about what kind of services the new club can
provide with prices ranging from around 200 US dollars to its most
expensive at over 1,200 US dollars.

Eric Chang is the marketing manager for the club, called Shanghai Xiyue
Health Management. He says the club aims to introduce a new concept of
yuezi to people in the city and that the traditional way of doing yuezi
is wrong.

"Traditionally and mistakenly, many people think all new mothers need is
rest. But actually what they really need to do more is something to focus
their attention. So we provide the experts to train them physically and
mentally to help them become better prepared to be mothers. We've also
designed a set of body exercises to help them recover and rebuild their
figure."

Therefore, in addition to various medical equipment, one can find all of
the body building facilities of a gym here, including tennis courts and
even a small golf course.

According to Eric Chang, the club has already gotten some reservations,
with its first new mother expected to arrive next month.

But, in a random survey conducted by CRI, most respondents said they
wouldn't go and try.

"Personally, I wouldn't go there. I think in addition to physical care,
family communication matters a lot during yuezi. If I had the money, I
would rather employ one or two professionals to take care of me and my
baby at home."

"The price is too high and I believe most people can't afford it."

Eric Chang says yuezi clubs are very popular in Taiwan, with over 200
such clubs already set up on the island. To attract more customers on the
mainland, the company plans to open another club targeting middle class
residents in the city within one or two years.

Chinese Studies - Let's party!

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

Let's party!

(lifestyle.com)
Updated: 2007-01-31 13:56

Lunar New Year is drawing near;and that means parties, both big and
small. It's a New Year, so you need a new look! Do you really want to
wear the same party outfit you wore last year? Absolutely not! But what
are the new party fashions? Take a look below and make yourself into the
next party queen!

How to dress up:

1. Black swan

Black is the color of mystery. Black clothes are common, but when
dressing up in a black skirt at a party, you will immediately become an
attractive and unique 'black swan'.

Dressing-up tips:

1) If you want to look sexier, wear an underskirt that will give you a
nice figure.

2) When choosing a skirt for the party, texture is key. Lace, voile and
wool are good choices.

Accessories:

1) Choose small items like lace, metal bracelets, or leather accessories
to match your black skirt. The color of these accessories should be dark
and match with black, such as navy blue or bottle green.

2) When wearing the black skirt, try wearing leg warmer and ankle
bracelets that make you look graceful and slim.

2. Elegant mermaid

In fairy tales, the mermaid is always an image of beauty. Wearing a long
fishtail skirt can make you look more charming.

Accessories:

Embroidery and flowers are fashionable accessories for the spring of
2007, which also add lovely and beautiful flavors to the fishtail skirt.

Dressing-up tips:

A tube top matches well with a fishtail skirt.

Learn mandarin - Online education

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Online education

(CRI)
Updated: 2007-01-11 13:59

The development of the internet has had a profound effect upon education
and how people learn. The popularity of online education in China serves
as good proof. Now still a supplement to traditional higher education,
online education is believed to be an important method and strategic
choice for lifetime learning in society.

24 year old Shanghai native Annie Wang is the envy of many of her peers.
After graduating from a top university, she successfully secured a
position in a world-famous management consulting firm. But, I think, no
one envies her pressure.

"Maybe in other people's eyes, I'm sort of an elite. But, within my
company, I'm among the lowest in terms of educational background. Many of
my colleagues are postgraduates and even doctors, with overseas study
experiences. I feel a lot of pressure here."

At the beginning of this year, Annie took the National Entrance Test for
Postgraduates and got accepted for postgraduate study at Fudan
University. Yet, after much hesitation, she gave up the opportunity,
since, she decided, she couldn't afford to be a full-time student.

Annie is surely not exceptional among young office workers nowadays, who
feel the urge to further their education but don't have time to return to
campus altogether.

Online education offers a great alternative for this group of people.

Professor John Spinks, executive director of U21 Global talks about the
advantages of online education.

Set up in 2001, U21 Global, based on a consortium of nearly 20 famous
universities from around the world, is the world??s premier e-university.
Unlike local online education programs, which focus primarily on graduate
studies, U21 Global strives to provide an elite education through the
internet.

It already boasts five Chinese members, namely Fudan University, Peking
University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, the University of Hong Kong and
Bei Wai or Beijing Foreign Studies University. Liu Jie from Bei Wai is in
charge of his university's partnership with U21 Global.

"It really gives adult learners a chance to enjoy world-class business
education programs without having to travel abroad. To U21 Global, China,
with its rapidly increasing demand for quality higher learning, is a huge
market."

Chinese universities and colleges in place are far from enough to meet
current needs. To promote education, both online and off, universities
without walls are sure to be a good solution to the problem.

Learn mandarin - Domain name scare for .com users

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Domain name scare for .com users

(Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2006-12-31 09:23

Thousands of Chinese Websites registered overseas could lose their domain
names next year because they cannot extend their services after the
Taiwan earthquake that severed undersea communication cables.

Several domain name operators said on their Websites yesterday that
".com" services, which need to connect to the United States servers to
work, will be virtually offline until the undersea cables are repaired.

Affected operators include now.cn, china-channel.com and bizcn.com, which
are all major ".com" domain name service providers in China.

"We can't expand our domain name usage period in the new year so we will
lose it if a foreign rival registers it at the beginning of 2007," said a
domain name user who declined to be identified.

An earthquake off the coast of Taiwan on Tuesday night severed a number
of important telecommunication cables linking Asia to the US.

The Internet connection between China and the US is expected to be fully
restored in two weeks, carriers said.

China Telecom and China Netcom said almost all international call
services and 15 percent of overseas-oriented Internet services had been
restored.

However, they added that the China-US Internet connection was still
jammed and barely functioning.

China's own domain name operation system, which ends with ".cn," was not
affected, according to a statement from the China Internet Network
Information Center, a state-level Internet domain name regulator.

"The services rooted in China are more reliable obviously after the
accident," said Lu Bowang, an independent Internet observer.

MSN, Microsoft's online chat program, was still not working yesterday.
MSN has no servers in China, except a few for its mobile phone version.
The service has 15 million users in China.

Shenzhen-based Tencent's chat program, QQ, is unaffected.

Some overseas-based anti-virus programs, including ones developed by
Symantec and Trend, were unable to connect to their home servers to
update virus definitions.

As time passes, the years start to show on your skin. What to do about
these new lines and wrinkles? A new peeling product may be the answer.

'Peeling' is a new word in cosmetics and is a revolution in skin care.
The seasons are changing, and it's the best time to try this new product,
and many top brands have introduced many new 'cell renewal' or peeling
products. But what exactly is 'peeling', and how can it make the skin so
radiant?

'Peeling' boosts the skin's metabolism, killing off the old, dead surface
cells, and uncovering the soft, new, younger-looking cells underneath.
Peeling refreshes the skin through moisturizing, nourishing and
anti-oxidizing.

Do I need peeling?

If you want to know whether you need peeling, take the following quiz.
1) Is your skin extremely dry?
2) Do you have oily skin and large pores?
2) Are there many fine lines on your skin?
4) Do you exercise less than two hours per week?
5) Do you use a computer for more than three hours per day?
6) Can you stay in the fresh air for more than two hours per day?
7) Do you usually stay up late or can't sleep well?
8) Do you often smoke or drink?
9) Is the city you live in seriously polluted?
10) Is your skin often exposed to the sun?
11) Is your life stressful?
If you answered 'yes' to three or more questions, then peeling may be the
right choice for you to regain your former radiance.

The Foreign Affairs Office of Beijing Municipality recently held a
release ceremony for the "Handbook for Foreigners in Beijing" at Xidan
Bookstore.

Starting now, foreigners travelling to Beijing and local expats can
benefit from the pocket-sized handbook, which provides useful information
on a variety of issues, including entry, taxes, business, travel,
religion, adoption, medical care and marriage. A detailed map of the 2008
Beijing Olympic's stadiums is also available on the last page of the book.

The handbook is printed in both English and Chinese.

Statistics from the Foreign Affairs Office show there are over 70,000
foreigners living in Beijing. The city also receives 3.5 million foreign
travelers annually.

Officers say the book will be kept updated throughout 2008 and the Korean
and Japanese versions are under way.

You can find the handbook at Beijing Xidan Bookstore for 25 yuan a copy.
Online orders are also available at here.

Chinese Tutor - Love and marriage lectures in universities

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Love and marriage lectures in universities

(chinanews.cn )
Updated: 2006-10-31 11:12

Lectures to reveal the myths of love and marriage have become more and
more popular in Chinese universities. A lecture of that kind attracts at
least one hundred students, most being freshmen and sophomores.

Love and marriage do have their problems behind the rosy scenes, and
these lectures actually work as precautions, answering students'
questions and solving their puzzles, no wonder they are so popular.

"Don't think that today's kids are open-minded and tactful. As a matter
of fact, many of them hardly know anything about love and marriage, thus
it is necessary to give lectures on that subject," said Xu Weisu, a
teacher and psychological adviser from Huadong Normal University.

Love has long remained a secret topic in China, thus is it proper to
bring it to class for discussion?

Xu thinks that it is the secrecy that has caused certain problems, and
revealing will only help the students to get a better understanding of
and a better preparation for their future life.

China's new online video spoof mocks TV commercial

(People's Daily/Xinhua)
Updated: 2006-10-25 10:34

The video artist who rose from obscurity by making fun of one of China's
leading directors has produced a new spoof mocking TV commercials,
attracting more than a hundred thousand viewers since last Thursday
(October 19).

The three-and-half minute Internet video made by Hu Ge appears to be a
typical, mundane television shopping program. The advertiser is a
medicine called "Two Foot Kick", produced by "Apollo Biopharm" that
boasts "99 percent effectiveness in boosting courage".

The video uses movie clips including Hollywood hits "American Dream",
"Mr. & Mrs. Smith", "Terminator 2", "Scary Movie 4" and Chinese movies
"Crazy Stone" and "KungFu Hustle". Stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger
and Angelina Jolie appear to be promoting the new "super medicine".

In July, China banned misleading advertising that promoted products for
breast enlargement, weight loss and height enhancing drugs.

Hu Ge's previous on-line short was a deadly and hilarious spoof of
Chinese director Chen Kaige's big-budget movie The Promise. Hu turned it
into a 20-minute TV crime drama titled A Murder Sparked by a Chinese Bun.
It was the talk of the Internet for weeks but it also outraged the
director who threatened to sue Hu.

Hu's new video was first posted on his blog last Thursday, which has
already received more than 110,000 visits.

Many viewers say the video is a good satire of TV commercials which often
grossly exaggerate the effects of the products.

"Egao", a slang term coined to describe the use of real film clips to
create mocking video with a completely different story has been growing
rapidly on the Internet. China's State Administration of Radio, Film and
Television announced new rules in August that were meant to rein in the
fad by requiring only authorized Web sites to show short films online.

Hu Ge is working on a 15-minute comedy costume film which is expected to
be posted on-line by the end of next month, Beijing Daily Messenger
reports.

Tibet winter travel tips

(chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2006-10-17 10:02

As Tibet is covered by ice and snow throughout the year, most people
assume that winter is not a good time to visit. However, according to
expert travelers, the winter temperature of Lhasa averages about 12
degrees Celsius and the daytime temperatures of winter in Lhasa can be
even higher as a result of intensive sunlight.

The year 2006 witnessed the inclusion of Mount Namjagbarwa on the "most
breath-taking places in China" list sponsored by the China National
Geography magazine. Nicknamed "the father of glaciers", 7,787-meter-high
Mount Namjagbarwa is located in the Nyingchi area, east of Tibet. The
most beautiful scenery of Mount Namjagbarwa can only be seen in autumn
and winter. As a result, Tibet winter travel has begun to catch people's
attention.

Recommended scenic spots

Recommended scenic spots for Tibet winter travelers are concentrated
around Lhasa and Nyingchi. The first is Mount Namjagbarwa whose
relatively low altitude and high humidity covers the mountain in fog and
cloud in spring and summer. As a result, the dry season, from September
to the spring is the best time to appreciate Mount Namjagbarwa. Others
sights include the old and new sections of Lhasa, boating in the Crayon
Brahmaputra, taking pictures at two rivers' joint (the Niyang river and
Brahmaputra river), sightseeing in Norbu Lingka (a beautiful garden on
the suburb of Lhasa), living in the holiday village by Basum Lake (a holy
lake at the foot of glaciers) and visiting Sangmu village.
