Games celebrations

Comment on "China invites world to Olympics" (China Daily website, August
9)

Congratulations to China! "Best preparations ever. Everything is on
target even one year ahead of schedule", said Jacque Rogge, the president
of the IOC.

The air pollution problem is not new: it affected Los Angeles, Seoul and
Atlanta before. Besides, China has taken concrete steps, like closing
down factories or reducing car traffic.

So let the world come and celebrate with us and foster friendship and
understanding.

Press can help

Comment on You Nuo's column "Exporters, it's time to clean up your act"
(China Daily, August 6)

You Nuo makes an excellent point in his column: "What governments can
realistically do to protect the interests of both small Chinese companies
and importing countries' consumers, is to work out a better system to
reinforce trade standards and ensure quality."

The press can help as well. Investigative reporters can write news
stories and articles about standards and quality.

Some people look down on reporters as snoops and scandal mongers, but in
fact the reports are an asset. You Nuo's column itself is a good example
of how the press is working to achieve this goal.

Same papers

Comment on "US candidates discuss China 'to get votes'" (China Daily,
August 9)

US politicians say the same things because they read the same papers. And
the papers are controlled by the same wallets, so they write the same
things.

But the candidate with the best acting talents will win the presidential
election.

Irrational award

Comment on "Is a 680,000-yuan scholarship too much for a top student?"
(China Daily website, August 7)

I think to give a student who comes in the top place in college entrance
exam a proper amount of money as a reward for her academic efforts and to
encourage other students is reasonable, but such a big number is not very
rational.

The same money could be used to fund several students in remote areas to
finish their education, in that way, the money might become more
meaningful.

An acknowledgement of first place in the entrance exam can come in many
other forms, and money is just one of them.

Comment on "Should Beida recruit more recommended students?" (China Daily

If those recommended students are outstanding enough, they can also pass

JK Rowling loses court battle over son pic

(Digital Spy)
Updated: 2007-08-08 17:02

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has lost a court battle over a photograph
of her son.

The best-selling writer was unhappy when a picture of her son David
appeared in the Sunday Express magazine, accompanying an article about
her parenting style. The photograph, which was taken in 2004 when the
child was 20 months old, showed Rowling pushing David in a buggy on an
Edinburgh street.

Rowling and her husband Neil Murray argued that their son's right to
privacy had been invaded by the picture, and sought damages from Express
Newspapers and the photo owners Big Pictures, as well as an injunction
which would ban further publication of the snap. The couple had filed the
lawsuit on behalf of their son.

However, a High Court judge ruled that "the law does not...allow them to
carve out a press-free zone for their children in respect of absolutely
everything they choose to do".

He added: "I have considerable sympathy for the claimant's parents and
anyone else who wishes to shield their children from intrusive media
attention... [but] an area of routine activity which, when conducted in a
public place, carries no guarantee of privacy."

Judge Patten ordered that Rowling and her husband must pay 拢40,000
interim costs to Big Pictures, pending the outcome of an appeal. A
temporary ban has been placed on publication of the photograph until the
appeal has taken place.

Chinese Pinyin - On the soap box in the men's room

ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column

On the soap box in the men's room

By Hu Xudong (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-08-07 14:02

Beijing taxi drivers are famous for being talkative. I wonder if they
will age to become the world's most articulate group of elderly people.
Probably, because my observations have shown that local Beijing elderly
people are much more effusive than their counterparts in other areas.
They cover various topics, even if no one else is listening.

Yesterday, I went swimming in a sanatorium. As I changed into swimming
suit, an old man entered. He sat down and heaved a sigh: "What time is
it?" I was the only one present and I almost answered. But I turned
around and found he was talking to the wall.

"Oh, it's already 4 o'clock!" he answered himself. But that was the
beginning of a long speech.

"How the time flies! It's like a white steed galloping away! A whole
afternoon is gone. I've done nothing in the past year. Don't you see? A
whole year is gone. What did I do in the past ten years? Nothing! Was I
any different ten years ago? Not much. But how come I've become an
octogenarian?

"The ancient people certainly knew something. In the Three Kingdoms
Period, the generals went to the battlefront and they'd only bother to
announce their names and nominal age to each other before engaging in a
fierce combat.

"Ah, how quickly a person's life passes away. Even Confucius once said:
'The passage of time is just like the flow of water.' He must have said
so as he changed clothes after a swim in the river.

"The water in the swimming pool is not linked with the river. It is
water, nevertheless, and it allows people to make remarks on its bank. By
the way, how did Confucius swim? Frog stroke, backstroke, or freestyle?
Could it be doggy-paddle? Why can't that Professor Yu Dan study this?"

I was awe-struck by this continuous flow of eloquence and forgot to
change clothes. I regretted not bringing my mobile phone to record this
rare speech. As I turned my brain into a recorder and pondered on what
the old man had said, he turned to me. "Young man, how old are you?"
Following his style, I replied: "This talentless man has squandered 30
plus 3 years."

"Good. You've got something. What are you doing in the swimming pool at
your age? When I was your age, I swam in the Kunming Lake and even
further, the Miyun Reservoir.

"I often brought a flock of girl students in Beida and Tsinghua. Do you
know what is a myriad of stars surrounding the moon? That says a lot
about me.

"At that time, how glamorous I was! Everyone in the Haidian Town knew me.
I could single-handedly throw down eight or ten men. But I got myself
thrown into the police station"

As I slipped away, two young men entered the room and were instantly
caught by the old man's account of his youth.

I have a great idea: We should invite the elderly people of Beijing to
lecture in the elderly universities throughout the country and help other
elderly people enrich their lives. Better still, we should study their
speech and apply for the UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage.

Desperate Housewives star fears pregnancy scenes

(WENN)
Updated: 2007-08-06 10:51

Teenage Desperate Housewives star Joy Lauren is dreading the filming of
upcoming scenes in which she has to give birth - because she has no idea
what a mum in labour acts like.

The young actress, who plays Danielle Van De Kamp on the hit show, admits
she doesn't know where to turn to get the information she needs.

Lauren tells internet gossip columnist Marc Malkin, "I was thinking of
going on YouTube or something, but I'm afraid of what I'll find.

"I've never been to a birth or seen one, so all I have to go on is movies
and stuff like that. A friend of mine offered to take me to Lamaze class,
and I was like, 'No!'"

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Malaysia's Independence and in
conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007, the Embassy of Malaysia in
Beijing will host "Malaysia Week" with a spectrum of performances,
demonstrations and exhibitions, at Beijing's Shangri-La's Kerry Centre
Hotel from August 27.

Events throughout the five days leading up to Malaysia's National Day on
31 August will highlight the nation's political, economic and social
development, multi-ethnic society, artistic and cultural heritage, as
well as to promote Malaysia as a key tourist destination in Southeast
Asia.

The fusion of influences making-up the eclectic Malaysian fabric is
reflected in the theme that showcases distinctive traditional
architecture juxtaposing with futuristic skyscrapers and more. Against
this backdrop, a line-up of visual, performing and culinary arts will be
presented. Exhibitions to be staged include demonstrations of original
work produced on location by artists and a photo exhibition showcasing
Malaysian art and design work across wide-ranging subjects. "Malaysia
Week" will also offer images of over three decades of Sino-Malaysian
bilateral relations. Performing art forms such as traditional dance and
singing sessions will offer more insights into Malaysian culture.

The art and design events will be complemented by a culinary festival
from August 20 to 31. Shangri-La's Kerry Centre Hotel's Coffee Garden
will be the venue for some of the best of the national cuisine prepared
by Malaysian guest chefs brought in specially for the occasion from Kuala
Lumpur Shangri-La Hotel. Beside these attractions, Malaysian restaurants
in Beijing will participate in the event and will feature the making of
"teh tarik" (tossed tea) and "roti canai" (kneaded light pastry).

After months of rumors, Nicole Richie confirmed Tuesday that she is
pregnant. "Yes I am. We are," Richie told ABC News' Diane Sawyer for an
interview to be aired this week. "I'm almost four months." Richie's
boyfriend, Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, is the father, she told
ABC, which issued a news release about the interview.

The 25-year-old star of "The Simple Life" and on-again pal of Paris
Hilton also talked with Sawyer about her guilty plea last week to driving
under the influence and the resulting four-day jail sentence.

"I have a responsibility and it's something that I did wrong, and if I
could personally apologize to every single person that has lost a loved
one from drunk driving, I would," Richie said. "And unfortunately I
can't, but this is my way of paying my dues and taking responsibility and
being an adult."

Richie also shared her thoughts on her hard-partying contemporaries and
what effect their bad behavior has on young fans.

The interview will air on "Good Morning America" on Thursday and Friday
and on "20/20" Friday night.

Broadway's 'Drowsy' will welcome a new "show off"

(Playbill)
Updated: 2007-07-30 20:00

Sutton Foster was Tony Award-nominated for creating the role in the
five-time Tony-winning musical at the Marquis Theatre. Davi takes over
for the departed Janine LaManna, who replaced Foster. Davi also appeared
in the Encores! concert Of Thee I Sing and starred as Peggy Sawyer in the
U.S. and Japanese tours of 42nd Street.

Janet gets the choice belting number "Show Off" - which includes cart
wheels and specialty bits - in the fizzy musical comedy.

The Drowsy Chaperone is directed and choreographed by Tony Award nominee
Casey Nicholaw (Spamalot), with music and lyrics by Tony Award winners
Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison and a book by Tony Award winners Bob
Martin and Don McKellar.

"To chase his blues away, a modern day musical theatre addict known
simply as 'Man in Chair' drops the needle on his favorite cast album -
the 1928 musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone," according to the
producers. "From the crackle of his hi-fi, the uproariously funny musical
magically bursts to life on stage. We are instantly immersed in the
hilarious tale of a glamorous bride and her uproarious wedding day,
complete with thrills and surprises that take both the cast (literally)
and the audience (metaphorically) soaring into the heavens. Man in
Chair's infectious love of The Drowsy Chaperone speaks to anyone who has
ever been transported by the theatre."

The musical plays Tuesday-Saturday at 8 PM with matinees on Wednesday and
Saturday at 2 PM and Sundays at 3 PM.

A North American tour launches in Toronto in September, with Bob Martin,
Georgia Engel and Nancy Opel.

Lindsay Lohan's new movie one of the worst of the year

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-29 16:45

LOS ANGELES - There's a fresh candidate in the running for worst movie of
2007 honors. "I Know Who Killed Me," a ridiculous thriller (minus the
thrills) starring the embattled Lindsay Lohan in a dual role, has all the
hallmarks necessary for qualification: A nonsensical plot that grows
sillier by the second, tawdry special effects, heavy-handed symbolism
that's big on electric-blue hues and mechanical performances are all
culprits as far as the title's concerned.

Actress Lindsay Lohan arrives for the premiere of the film 'Georgia Rule'
at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York in this May 8, 2007 file
photo.[Reuters]

We'll probably never know whether Lohan's most recent difficulties took
their toll on the picture's box office potential, because either way,
this movie doesn't even warrant one star. It was released on Friday
without screening in advance for critics.

Lohan plays Aubrey Fleming, an aspiring writer and promising pianist who
disappears one evening while out with friends only to turn up in a
hospital minus a hand and a leg after barely escaping from a madman's
torture chamber.

When her distraught parents (Julia Ormond, Neal McDonough) rush to her
side while guys in FBI T-shirts methodically hunt for her would-be
killer, she doesn't recognize the name they call her, insisting that
she's Dakota Moss, a pole dancer in a seedy strip joint who subsequently
has reason to believe she may actually be Aubrey's identical twin sister.

Don't even ask.

You might, however, find yourself asking just what was Lohan -- whose
promising career already has taken a few hits with such films as "Just My
Luck" and "Georgia Rule" -- thinking when she signed on to this nonsense?

LOS ANGELES - An Arizona man who allegedly demanded more than $1 million
not to publish Tom Cruise's stolen wedding photographs has been arrested,
the actor's lawyer said Thursday.

David Hans Schmidt, known for brokering deals involving compromising
celebrity photos and videos, approached Cruise's representatives about
six weeks ago with photos from the actor's Italian wedding last year to
Katie Holmes, attorney Bertram Fields said. The FBI was contacted.

"He was looking for money, lots of money," Fields said.

Schmidt, 47, was arrested by federal agents Tuesday, said FBI spokeswoman
Laura Eimiller, but she said the criminal complaint charging him was
under seal in federal court and she refused to comment.

Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles,
said a judge set bond at $100,000. Schmidt was being held Thursday at the
Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, according to jail records.

It was not immediately clear if Schmidt had a lawyer or how he obtained
the photos.

Schmidt has also been trying to auction off Paris Hilton's diaries, along
with photos of her in various stages of undress and other personal items
that had been locked away in a Los Angeles-area storage locker until a
few months ago.

Hilton's publicist, Elliot Mintz, has said the belongings were "illegally
seized" from the storage facility.

The Chinese Harry Potter experience

By ?tabitha messick
Updated: 2007-07-25 17:16

Harry Potter fans wait in front of Beijing's Xidan Bookstore July 21 to
get their copy of the last book in the series.

Harry Potter is overrated.

For weeks, book lovers have been anticipating the arrival of the final
installment of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Internet articles,
chat rooms and dedicated Potter fans have been in near hysteria - will
Harry live or die? How will the story end?

And now the world knows.

And somehow through it all J.K Rowling has managed to make everyone happy.

I was sucked into the Harry Potter mania as well. I had pre-ordered the
book from Wangfujing Foreign Language Bookstore soon after I arrived in
China. I had been anxiously awaiting the book for two years.

Before the book was in my hands, I had been cautiously reading articles
about the Harry Potter phenomenon, hoping not to run across spoilers.

When I got up at 5:30 a.m. on July 21, I was excited but also anxious as
I rode a cab to Wangfujing where I stood in a weaving line along with
about 300 others, more than half of who were Chinese. I waited for over
an hour before the doors opened, and then even longer as they only
allowed about 10 people in at a time inside the store to receive their
pre-ordered book.

But this did not deter the frenzied crowd. Inside, the whole process was
still quite chaotic.

The store had games, gadgets, and posters adorned on the walls. A Harry
Potter movie was showing on a big screen and cameras were flashing
continuously. Everyone wanted to remember this momentous occasion.

I immediately went back to my apartment and read the book in sitting.
After all, it is impossible to put down.

Though I still personally think that J.K. Rowling is a literary genius,
her epilogue was ridiculous. I feel sorry for anyone who flipped to the
back page and read it first. It was cheesy and predictable.

However, the book, all in all, was brilliant. But I have come to expect
this near perfection in the Potter series.

I honestly laughed out loud in many parts. And tears were shed more than
a couple of times. But it is my frustration that I remember the most.

I was pleased to see that all the loose strings were tied- but the pretty
bows they tied disappointed me.

There are answers to all the puzzling questions we had for 10 years since
the first book came out in 1997. Is Snape good or evil? Will Hogwarts
reopen? Will Voldermort be defeated? What are the Deathly Hallows? Who
will live? Who will die?

Harry Potter fans

There is not a lot of misleading plot lines that make the other Potter
books so dramatic. Even from the first page, there is non-stop action.

Living the Harry Potter experience in China was rewarding and not just
because I got the satisfaction of reading the book 12 hours before the
United States.

Though the final book didn't live up to the hype in my mind, it was still
excellent. This is a credit to Rowling.

Harry Potter is not just a book -- it's a movement. Harry Potter will do
more than promote literacy and ignite passions. It will continue to be a
story for all ages.

A colorful hospital!?
By Cai Wenjun (Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2006-05-16 14:06

A nurse prepares a transfusion for a patient in the yellow area at
Shanghai Shibei Hospital. The hospital has color coded its transfusion
service area into red, yellow, blue, pink and green according to the
needs of patients. The yellow area is designated for patients with poor
mobility or those who need to use a toilet frequently after a transfusion.

A local hospital has color coded its transfusion service area into red,
yellow, blue, pink and green, all according to patients' medical needs.

Officials at Shanghai Shibei Hospital said the change has resulted in
improved service and reduced confusion about each patient's medical
circumstances.

The hospital, the first in the city to institute such reform, started the
renovation two weeks ago.

"We have 600 to 700 patients receiving transfusion every day. Many are
the elderly with chronic syndromes and children or the weak with
respiratory problems," said Dr Yang Qunqing, director of Shibei's
emergency department.

The red area serves patients in poor physical condition or needing
oxygen. The area is only 10 meters from a nurse station, allowing nurses
to frequently check patients and respond promptly in emergency situations.

The yellow area is designated for patients with poor mobility or those
who go to toilets frequently after transfusion, so it is near the toilets.

The blue area is for patients with respiratory diseases and is designed
to reduce spread of respiratory infections between patients. Staff will
more thoroughly disinfect that area.

The pink area is for patients, who can't sit for a long time and should
lie during transfusion. The green area is for young patients who don't
have serious diseases.

Chirac questioned in corruption probe

Updated: 2007-07-20 07:21

A French judge questioned former President Jacques Chirac for more than 4
hours yesterday in an investigation into a party financing scandal that
dates to his time as mayor of Paris, his lawyer said.

It was the first time a French president has undergone questioning under
such conditions, and marks a sobering point in Chirac's four-decade
political career.

The party financing investigation is the most potent of a string of
potential legal problems the 74-year-old Chirac faces now that he no
longer has presidential immunity. It remains unclear whether Chirac, who
turned over power to Nicolas Sarkozy in May, will ever be tried in this
or other legal cases implicating him.

Chirac was questioned as a material witness in his Paris offices by
investigating Judge Alain Philibeaux, said Chirac's lawyer Jean Veil, who
was also present. The questioning started at 9:15 am and ended at 1:30 pm.

"The former head of state explained himself very completely, very calmly,
in a climate of great courtesy and simplicity," Veil told reporters
outside Chirac's building afterward.

The judge has been waiting for years to talk to Chirac himself about how
much he knew about the financing scandal, which has already targeted
several former colleagues of Chirac's.

The investigation concerns a fake jobs scheme used to finance Chirac's
conservative party RPR while he was mayor of Paris, from 1977-95. He was
president from 1995 until May 16.

Investigators say RPR operatives were illegally on the Paris city payroll
in a scheme to help finance the party, and that the equivalent of
millions of euros (dollars) in salaries and fees were doled out.

The RPR, or Rally for the Republic, was later replaced by the UMP, or
Union for a Popular Movement, which now dominates parliament and
Sarkozy's government.

Philibeaux's investigation turned up a 1993 letter in which Chirac
requested a raise for a secretary who was paid by City Hall - but who
actually worked at party headquarters.

Former Prime Minister Alain Juppe, a close Chirac ally, was convicted in
the case in 2004 and given a 14-month suspended prison sentence and a
yearlong ban from politics.

Under French law, a material witness falls between a simple witness and a
suspect. The material witness is not formally under investigation and has
the right to a lawyer during questioning, but can later face charges if
investigating magistrates find "serious or concordant signs" of an
infraction or a crime.

Britney Spears upsets humane society

(WENN)

Britney Spears

Britney Spears has come under fire from an animal rights group in Los
Angeles after choosing to buy a new $3,000 dog from a pet store.

The Humane Society officials claim the pop superstar should have spent
more time picking her pet.

Spokeswoman Stephanie Shain tells TV news show Entertainment Tonight,
"Choosing a dog is a major lifestyle decision that should not be taken
lightly.

"We suggest that people take time to choose a member of their family, and
to be sure they are working with a reputable breeder... Ms. Spears is
setting a damaging example to the public.

"Most dogs sold in pet stores come from puppy mills--factory-like
facilities, churning out purebred and 'designer' puppies in large
numbers. Puppy mills look only to make a profit; [they] commonly
disregard the dog's physical and emotional health."

Civilized behavior

People need to queue up because only when everyone behaves this way will
everyone get what they want (as counter-intuitive as that sounds). The
government should budget more money to educate citizens and hire more
officers to enforce civilized behavior. Leaving people to their own
devices (through lack of enforcement) will not solve the problem.

Crossing road junctions any- where in China, even in "civilized"
Shanghai, can be hazardous because drivers (including public transport
drivers) always seem to be able to "turn right on red" without heeding
pedestrians. Also at road junctions, right-turning vehicles compete
head-on with oncoming traffic for use of the junction space. Why can't
China have a traffic light system where time is allocated specially for
turning traffic instead of having these two kinds of drivers competing
head-to-head for space on the road? China has so many smart people in
government, surely this flaw should be apparent to everyone.

Aging problem

Comments on "Most people free to have more than one child" ( China Daily,
July 11).

The essential problem with our population now is not a "population
surge", but the aging of the entire society. Just imagine that maybe one
day in the future most of the population would consist of old fellows
tottering on the streets!

Jazzboy

On the China Daily website

We still have a long way to go before the whole nation is reasonably well
protected by a social security system, which depends as much on
individual contributions as the performance of the economy.

Without such a safety net, it will be impossible to convince poor farmers
that they can live through their sunset years without at least one son
taking care of them.

And let's not forget the ancient belief that only the son carries on the
family name, or the blood-line. Call it part of our Chinese heritage if
you will because it has little to do with one's upbringing and even less
with wealth.

Only people who have led a dehumanizing existence for so long that a
normal family no longer makes any sense to them can afford to ignore
their generational duties. Whether most of them do so is another story.

What really scares me is not over-population or a gender imbalance, but
the fact that we are already showing signs of becoming an aging society
when we are at least a couple decades short of being capable of dealing
with the problem gracefully.

Jim

On the China Daily website

The new regulation is useful just to city people, not to the rich or to
poor people in the countryside.

Without the regulation, some Chinese people would have more than one
child.

The government should solve this problem.

Free Chinese Lesson - Avril:Marriage turned me from a tomboy to a real woman

Avril:Marriage turned me from a tomboy to a real woman

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-07-14 10:52

When she announced her arrival five years ago with the huge hit single
Complicated, Avril Lavigne came across as the pop world's brattish little
sister.

Her face daubed with black eyeliner, the then 17-year-old was the surly,
snarling antidote to clean-cut pop princesses such as Britney Spears.

How times have changed. With Britney now lurching from one personal
crisis and fashion disaster to the next, Avril is the disaffected
skater-girl who has cleaned up her act.

With her flowing dark locks now bleached blonde and a wedding ring on her
finger, the Canadian has grown up fast.

But while age and marriage (to Canadian rocker Deryck Whibley) have
undoubtedly mellowed Avril, the 22-year- old hasn't lost her edge
completely.

Sitting in front of me in a hoodie and sneakers, she is still every inch
the rock chick with a high-octane album to promote.

"I've changed a lot over the past five years," she says. "When people
first got to know my name, I was just a kid.

"I was a very young 17-year-old and I came from a small town. I had
different clothes and a different hairstyle. I've gone from being a
tomboy kid to being a woman."

When I first interviewed her, at the height of her initial success,
Lavigne gave the sullen answers of a spiky teenager.

Now, even though she is reticent to reveal too much about her personal
life, she is far more polite and forthcoming.

"Everyone can see the changes in me,' she agrees. 'But underneath I'm the
same. I'm not sitting here in a Chanel dress.

Sienna recalls bitter experience with journalists

(IANS)

Sienna Miller

Hollywood actress Sienna Miller says her latest film brought back bitter
memories of one of her first interviews when a reporter she invited home
for tea criticised her housekeeping skills.

Sienna plays the role of a TV star in her new film 'Interview', where she
plots against a political reporter whom she invites back to her apartment
after he is injured in an accident, contactmusic.com reported.

She says: 'I get into trouble with journalists who take advantage of my
honesty and openness. I invited someone back to my house for a cup of
tea, this woman, and then she sort of proceeded to write this article
about the state of my apartment and how messy it was... so that wasn't a
good starting point.

'That was one of my first interview experiences. I'm much more savvy now.
But it's hard to find a journalist who you know wouldn't mess you over
with the right scoop. So I personally don't tend to trust journalists
that much.'

The Toronto International Film Festival unveiled another slew of
premieres on Tuesday, including gala slots for George Clooney starrer
"Michael Clayton" and Gavin Hood's "Rendition" starring Reese
Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal and Meryl Streep.

"Clayton," the directorial debut of "Bourne Identity" screenwriter Tony
Gilroy, will receive the red carpet treatment at Roy Thomson Hall. The
Warner Bros. legal drama is expected to bow in Venice and possibly play
at the Deauville festival before shifting to Toronto for its North
American premiere. It opens October 5 in the U.S.

Also getting a gala sendoff in Toronto is "Rendition," a New Line Cinema
thriller set for an October 21 release stateside and a December 21 bow in
Canada.

Hood's "Tsotsi" helped raise the profile of South African films, earning
the top audience award at Toronto in 2005 before going on to win the
Academy Award for best foreign-language film.

Films from veteran directors headed to the festival's Special
Presentations sidebar include Neil Jordan's "The Brave One," a Warner
Bros. release starring Jodie Foster and Mary Steenburgen, and Peter
Greenaway's "Nightwatching," a Rembrandt biopic that will have its
international premiere here after bowing in the Netherlands.

Toronto also has booked "Nothing Is Private," the feature directorial
debut of "Six Feet Under" creator Alan Ball. Ball penned the screenplay
for "American Beauty," which bowed in Toronto in 1999 before going on to
Oscar acclaim. Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello and Toni Collette topline the
drama about sexual politics and bigotry set against the backdrop of the
Gulf War in 1991.

Indian director Santosh Sivan ("Asoka") will make his English-language
debut in Toronto with "Before the Rains," a tale set in 1930s India about
a married British colonialist (Linus Roache) accused of having an affair
with his housemaid (Nandita Das). And Julian Schnabel's Cannes award
winner "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" will unspool as part of the
sidebar.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs September 6-15.

Tackling the source

Comments on Li Xing's column "Bottled water is not so eco-friendly"
(China Daily July 5)

Thank you for this article. I have also thought about this. I agree that
cleaning up the water sources and water distribution systems would help
in keeping our world clean and would help to keep our drinking water safe.

Judy Deeley

What intelligent writing, Ms. Li! Issues are always easier to deal with
when there is some indication of why there is more than one side.

A common alternative to bottled or tap water in the United States is
home-filtered water such as the Brita products. This is handy, since you
can "make" as much water as you need.

I plan to start reading this web site regularly. High quality, and
interesting.

I was interested in the column written by Li. There are too many column
related to economics and business development. What they are doing are
just describing the situation, or raising the problem without giving any
practical solutions.

Comparatively, the recommendations given by you are more realistic and
practical, keep working on it. Dig more new topics out.

Bad road policies

Comments on Zou Hanru's column "Mainland drivers need to shape up" (China
Daily, July 6)

Besides the lack of good behavior from drivers and pedestrians alike,
there are also many factors due to bad urban policies: streets too wide
to cross; lack of sidewalks or only pedestrian sidewalks; lack of well
designed street signs; uncoordinated road signboards, etc.

Also, the speed of public transportation tends to be too slow, so private
cars and taxis fill the need for speedier travel.

On China Daily website

As a frequent visitor to HK and mainland, I wholly agree with the writer
of the article.

When I cross the road in mainland, I know it is the single most dangerous
experience I am likely to face, whereas in HK, I feel totally safe.

It is the attitude of the mainlanders that needs to change, coupled with
a stronger enforcement of the traffic laws, through more public
investment.

I would also recommend more rights for pedestrians over car drivers
because while a damaged car can be replaced, a pedestrian hit by a
speeding car cannot.

Lionel Richie addresses daughter's case

NEW ORLEANS - Lionel Richie didn't skirt questions about his daughter's
drunken-driving case after his performance at the Essence Music Festival.

"She's just in an unfortunate situation," he said Saturday night.

Nicole Richie, 25, is scheduled to go on trial Wednesday. She was
arrested Dec. 11 and pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of
driving under the influence. In addition, her case contains an allegation
that she had a prior misdemeanor DUI conviction in June 2003.

"She keeps apologizing to me," Lionel Richie said. "I told her, 'You're
doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing to your father at this
age.'"

The R&B star said celebrities today are under more scrutiny than ever
before.

"There's just so much information out there right now — MySpace, cell
phones, the Internet," he said. "If we had had all that when The
Commodores were around, God only knows what my mother and father would
have seen."

To be determined is whether Nicole Richie will spend time in jail like
her friend Paris Hilton, who served about 23 days behind bars for
violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

The California vehicle code says a person convicted of DUI twice within
10 years can be sentenced to 90 days to a year in jail and have driving
privileges suspended.

An estimated 200,000 people attended the Essence Music Festival, which
returned to New Orleans for the first time since Hurricane Katrina,
festival officials said Sunday. The festival had been held in New Orleans
over the Fourth of July weekend since its launch in 1995. Last year, it
was moved to Houston.
