Malaysia Week begins

Updated: 2007-08-03 17:33

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Malaysia's Independence and in
conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007, the Embassy of Malaysia in
Beijing will host "Malaysia Week" with a spectrum of performances,
demonstrations and exhibitions, at Beijing's Shangri-La's Kerry Centre
Hotel from August 27.

Events throughout the five days leading up to Malaysia's National Day on
31 August will highlight the nation's political, economic and social
development, multi-ethnic society, artistic and cultural heritage, as
well as to promote Malaysia as a key tourist destination in Southeast
Asia.

The fusion of influences making-up the eclectic Malaysian fabric is
reflected in the theme that showcases distinctive traditional
architecture juxtaposing with futuristic skyscrapers and more. Against
this backdrop, a line-up of visual, performing and culinary arts will be
presented. Exhibitions to be staged include demonstrations of original
work produced on location by artists and a photo exhibition showcasing
Malaysian art and design work across wide-ranging subjects. "Malaysia
Week" will also offer images of over three decades of Sino-Malaysian
bilateral relations. Performing art forms such as traditional dance and
singing sessions will offer more insights into Malaysian culture.

The art and design events will be complemented by a culinary festival
from August 20 to 31. Shangri-La's Kerry Centre Hotel's Coffee Garden
will be the venue for some of the best of the national cuisine prepared
by Malaysian guest chefs brought in specially for the occasion from Kuala
Lumpur Shangri-La Hotel. Beside these attractions, Malaysian restaurants
in Beijing will participate in the event and will feature the making of
"teh tarik" (tossed tea) and "roti canai" (kneaded light pastry).

Venue: Level 1, No.1 Guang Hua Road, Chaoyang district, Shangri-La's
Kerry Centre Hotel
Date: August 27鈥31
