A colorful hospital!?

needs of patients. The yellow area is designated for patients with poor

A local hospital has color coded its transfusion service area into red,
yellow, blue, pink and green, all according to patients' medical needs.

Officials at Shanghai Shibei Hospital said the change has resulted in
improved service and reduced confusion about each patient's medical
circumstances.

The hospital, the first in the city to institute such reform, started the
renovation two weeks ago.

"We have 600 to 700 patients receiving transfusion every day. Many are
the elderly with chronic syndromes and children or the weak with
respiratory problems," said Dr Yang Qunqing, director of Shibei's
emergency department.

The red area serves patients in poor physical condition or needing
oxygen. The area is only 10 meters from a nurse station, allowing nurses
to frequently check patients and respond promptly in emergency situations.

The yellow area is designated for patients with poor mobility or those
who go to toilets frequently after transfusion, so it is near the toilets.

The blue area is for patients with respiratory diseases and is designed
to reduce spread of respiratory infections between patients. Staff will
more thoroughly disinfect that area.

The pink area is for patients, who can't sit for a long time and should
lie during transfusion. The green area is for young patients who don't
have serious diseases.
