Hi Horas- Thank you for the correction. I always use dict.leo.org, but it didn't have the specific
reference. I'll make sure to add the other one as well. You can never have enough German

explanations.
It is possible to tell me in English ?

I am a Chinese, sorry my English is not good enough to translate it. I can only say: 鸡蛋灌饼
is a kind of popular breakfast in mainland China, pouring mixture of egg and chopped fistular
onion into the pancake, it’s delicious.
gougou -
Ok, no culinary etymologies from me, but here is what I remember from one or another roadside meal:
jianbing is a pancake about the size of a (big) plate, which is topped with sauce, herbs and
something similar to youtiao (basically, flour fried in oil). The whole thing is then folded up
and can replace a meal. I've never been able to eat more than two. (And when I did have two for
breakfast, I would not be hungry in time for my lunch break!)
Looks about like this:
(Picture found here)
guanbing is about the size of your palm, and a bit thicker. A raw egg is filled into it, then the
whole thing is placed onto a hot stone. Once the egg hardened, toppings, which can be sweet or
spicy, are added and the thing is folded up. Of these, you're gonna need somewhere between 5 and
15 to fill you up, depending on your metabolism.
Roughly, this is what you get (although my street vendor does not provide a red table cloth!):
(Picture taken from here)
Gary Soup -
I think the "guan" here means "filled" in the sense of "stuffed". Ji dan guan bing usually is a
fat, disc-shaped pastry with the egg and whatever else fully enclosed. "jian bing" usually refers
to a more crepe-like concoction, withe the crepe folded around egg, bean sauce, spices and crunchy
piece of fried tofu skin or yu tiao.
Just yesterday I returned to the US from Shanghai where I became addicted to the jian bing made by
a couple near our new Hongkou apartment. If made well, they are a really miraculous mix of
textures and flavors. Ji dan guan bing are good and filling, but nowhere near a good jian bing in
enjoyment, IMHO.
roddy -
Matters close to my heart (in the form of cholesterol, I suspect).
Jidan guanbing is a pretty plain pancake fried on a griddle. While being fried the clever jidan
guanbing maker uses chopsticks to somehow make a hole in the pancake and an egg is poured in. Fry
till cooked. Serve with pickles, lajiao, whatever. photo

I haven't seen Jian Bing in Shanghai, I thought they had been a victim of rapid development!
Please tell me where you can get them!
Wow, gougou can eat 2 jian bing, that is quite impressive, I can only eat one, max.
To the original poster, jian bing is made of a thin pancake of ground green bean flour, topped
with one egg, "香菜“ (coriander), hot bean paste, 甜麵醬 (sweet noodle sauce) and a 油條
or fried dough rectangle. It costs 2 yuan.
Edit:
OMG, you can watch woman making one on this link, it's all there, but she doesn't add coriander
香菜! food porn!

From the same person, what he calls "Southern style dan bing", again, very similar to jian bing
but no 香菜. I think this guy's technique is better than the first woman's.

It was on Huihe Lu just north of of Balin Lu. That's near Miyun Lu and Zhongshan Bei Er Lu, and
just north of Tongji University. If you take the #123 bus, it's within sight of the last stop
before the terminus, just after the bus turns from Miyun Lu onto Huihe Lu. It's also just around
the corner from Cheng Feng Doujiang Dian, the big 24-hour cheap eats place that most Tongji
students probably know (maybe Fudan students, too).
The jian bing are made by a couple, with the woman doing the actual cooking and the man breaking
the egg and handing her the ingredients like the crispy fried dough. Her technique is similar to
the woman in the video, though she DOES add coriander (thank God!) and she doesn't cut it wll the
way through at the end, just folds it in two before it goes in the bag. She's very fast.
Only 1.7 yuan there!

Did anyone here do the Pimsleur Cantonese? I did some of it. But with only 30 lessons it's WAY too
little. 90 lessons as with Mandarin would be a good start.
Maybe we should do a wiki style project! Write down a transscript of each Mandarin lesson, and
then do a voice recording with some native speakers. So basically do our own Pimsleur.
Those interested in SHnese could do the same too.

That's a great idea if we could find poeople willing to do the transcript - a big project. I found
the same with Pimsleurs Korean. Only lessons 1 - 30. I'm on lesson 87 with Mandarin and would love
the same detail for the Korean.
I'm being a bit adventurous really. I'm doing Pimsleurs Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and Cantonese
all at the same time. Scientifically speaking this should be detrimental to my learning but so far
it's working ok. It's about 3 hours per day if you include the pauses but is an effective way to
learn for me. Mandarin is my dominant second language so sometimes I answer Japanese questions in
mandarin automatically by accident.
I'm finding Japanese the hardest, Korean the most interesting (maybe because this is newest for
me), and Cantonese the least interesting. As I would like to live in all four regions I have all
the motivation i need.
Anyone else tried concurrent multiple pimsleur learning?

I think their system is good. You can do it while driving, or whatever. But 30 lessons is not
eneugh. 90, as in Mandarin, is a good jumpstart for further studies. I really like that there is
no book. The Yale writing is really hard to understand and one is bound to pronounce words wrong.

People may speak bad English to me, but I never recall laughing at one. I always have respect for
people who speak another language. Specially with Chinese, they usually don't have the 'don't
care' approach and are very afraid of errors.
BTW, I recall one error in the Pimsleur course. Somewhere when they talked about open/close it
said "mun' had no literal meaning, but actually means 'door'.

I really think highly of the Pimsleur courses as an introduction to a language. It is just an
introduction though, even if you go through all 90 lessons in the Mandarin course. I don't think
anyone has to worry about sounding like a robot afterwards though. If you're studying 10 hours a
day, you could do all 90 lessons in about 10 days, allowing an hour per 30 minute lesson. Not bad
for 500 words. But I think they recommend 1 lesson per day, which gives you lots of time to use
other learning resources such as books, videos, software, etc, while letting the Pimsleur recall
method sink in. If you get nothing else out of Pimsleur except solid pronunciation with correct
tones, it's still worth it. It isn't really a vocabulary building tool, so hopefully no one gets
hung up on how many words they learned. Pimsleur really helps build a solid foundation in your
language of study. Increasing your vocabulary can come later after that foundation has been built.

Learning only 500 words in 100 hours of study? That sounds highly inefficient to me, even if you
are studying the notoriously difficult Chinese. Can you carry a conversation after learning these
500 words?
mikeedward -
I'm saying learning 500 words in 10 days isn't bad... especially the first 500 words you learn in
a new language. Anyways, I was trying to say Pimsleur isn't for learning vocab, but for building a
solid foundation in a language.
rose~ -
I am using Pimsleur at the moment. I find it OK, but I would be happy for it to move a little
faster. Also, it makes me chuckle a bit as it is tailored to the American male...
e.g., an actualy sentence was along the lines of:
Quote:
"You are sitting in a restaurant with a Chinese woman. Ask her if she would like to come to your
place."
What is a better alternative to Pimsleur?
mikeedward -
Wannabeafreak, you mentioned in another thread that you did each Pimsleur lesson 6 times. I
totally agree with you that that was a complete waste of time.

I know that Chinese people still need it (although I'm guessing increasingly less with computers),
but how useful is it for a foreigner? I'm sure it's helpful to know certain aspects of it and some
of the basics, but is it really that necessary to master many characters? When will I ever be in
the situation to write Chinese characters, outside of studying in school? Obviously, reading them
is necessary, but writing?? I figure the Chinese dept. must find it not very useful because our
first-year, we had to listen to tapes then write down what we heard, and after about 500 of them,
we moved into doing compositions at home, so basically, you can just look up what you don't
know/forget.

Personally I feel its quite an important part of learning and getting to know the language... it
also helps that learning a character cement the character into my memory and thus makes it easier
to read later...
xuechengfeng -
Yeah, I know what you're saying, I just get discouraged because I studied so long and hard to
drill a certain character into my brain. Then, I don't use it for a while, and I can't remember
how to write it for the life of me. Quite depressing.
Shadowdh -
I know what you mean... its even worse when you have only just learned a character and then forget
it the next day... DOH...
Long Zhiren -
Do you mean just writing, or reading as well?
In all of my language studies, reading/writing always led the way for speaking/listening. I have
to write and read it before I have much confidence in using it in conversation. I can't settle for
just pinyin either for fear that the homonyms will get me.
Writing lags because I don't write much and forgetting how to write them happens very quickly.
Typing it is much easier! This seems to happen to native Chinese as well.
Reading and character recognition is by far easier and thus my present preferred way to grow my
working Chinese vocabulary.
I'm envious of those who have the talent to learn by just merely listening. However, I'm really
skeptical of how well they can advance their vocabularies. They constantly confuse words if they
can't read or write. There's constant guessing as to which words are which. I believe the
situation is hopeless for them until they start writing/reading.
ange9s -
I'm sure you could learn without reading and writing, I know a lot of ABCs that speak and
comprehend fluently but can't read a whole sentence. I can't remember characters so well unless I
write them, though.
Chinapage -

wushijiao -
I think ideally it would be great to learn to write well. As Shadowth said, it can help in the
reading process as well. I suppose in most schools you need to know how to write.
However, I also think there’s a good argument to be made for putting off learning to write (by
hand). I think the argument is fairly simple: all the hours that you spend in the first year in
writing a character over and over again could be better spent in listening speaking and reading.
Chinese has 189 radicals and about 1,800 phonetic components. Getting familiar with most of these
as fast as possible is also beneficial for guessing the meaning of new characters. I also think
it’s good to get a huge amount of hours listening and then speaking under your belt as fast as
possible. Also, you don’t really need to know how to write in order to read. Personally, I was
at the point of not really being able to write, but still being able to read books. In short, some
linguistic theorists think that there is a core groups of words, phrases, and grammar that form
every language, and a beginner should try to learn it ASAP. The more intense the studying is in
the beginning, the better, and, some might say that although the hours spent writing characters
have some intrinsic value, they could be better shifted into other areas so as to better improve
your whole Chinese ability.
Also, I think once you get into the more intermediate stages, in addition to new vocabulary
acquisition, I think a good way to measure your daily performance is comprehensible input per day
(reading and listening that you understand) and quality output (ie. correct speaking) per day.
Basically, the bigger your vocab, the more you will be able to understand. As you understand more,
a wider variety of stuff will go from “too hard” to “comprehensible”. As bomocai’s post
showed, once you can understand the basics of something (ie a soap opera or short story, novel,
newspaper article…etc) then you can learn new vocabulary from it. In other words, at some point
you get caught in a beneficial cycle of learning, but you must first have a big base of practice
(which might take hundreds of hours).
This whole argument hinges on the fact that it is possible to re-learn how to write later on. I
think this is possible. In late February I decided to take the HSK advanced, which includes
writing an essay by hand. I then spent about 1-3 hours per day writing. I then stumbled upon a
book that I really liked “Learning Chinese Characters from Ms. Zhang:
张老师教汉字;汉字识写课本” 张惠芬, 编者. (I’d recommend that book for people
re-learning how to write due to the usefulness of its practice exercises). After that book, I
wrote a bunch of random stuff, trying to do essays by hand. Every time I didn’t know a useful
word or phrase, I’d write it over and over again. To make a long story short, by the end of
April I was able to spit out a handwritten essay that was a long as most other people taking the
test. Granted, it was aesthetically the ugliest piece of crap the HSK people will ever see, and,
in fact, learning how to write well at the beginning so as to write aesthetically well may be a
good enough reason to learn to write from the start. In any case, I was able to do it. So, I think
it is possible to learn to re-learn to write later on, if you choose to do so.
Just my two cents. I’m not insulting people who think writing is best learnt at the start, just
saying it can be a matter of priorities. Also, every learner has a different learning style, so
writing may be appropriate for some people.
gato -
Elementary schools in mainland China now also treat reading and writing differently. Teachers now
recognize that students don't necessarily have to be able to write every character that they are
taught. It's a good idea to get students to learn to READ as many characters as quickly as
possibly so that their reading vocabulary at least match the size of their oral vocabulary. Even
Chinese characters for everyday words like "arms" (胳臂) and "knees" (膝盖)are fairly
complicated to write. When you break through the 2000 character mark, you can move on to much more
interesting reading material.
As I posted in another thread, mainland children are typically required to recognize 1600-1800
characters and write 800-1000 by the end of second grade, recognize 2500 characters and write 2000
by the end of fourth See http://www. /showth...8810#post68810
Here's a vocab list for grades 1-4 for one particular textbook series listed by grade level (about
2700 characters for reading and 2000 for writing):
http://www.ywcbs.com/UpFile/UpLoadFi...%DA1%CC%D7.pdf
Here is a vocab list for grade 1-3 for a series of experimental textbooks (which means that they
are more demanding).

I think there's a pretty clear difference between learning how to write out a romanized alphabet

Have you thought about porting it to a "native" windows application? That way you could install a
system-wide keyboard hook which means it would be compatible with all windows programs. In other
words, keystrokes are first sent to your application, you do all your processing there, then send
the modified result (the Cantonese character) to the target window.
I've tried your tool out, and it's quite good (even though I know next-to-nothing). Great job -

Chinese Speaking - 'Sex and the City' movie in the works

'Sex and the City' movie in the works

Updated: 2007-07-06 08:34
The cast of the former HBO series, 'Sex and the City,' from left: Sarah
Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall, arrive for
the Screen Actors Guild Awards, on March 11, 2001, in Los Angeles.[AP]
NEW YORK - Are Carrie and Mr. Big still together? Did Charlotte adopt a
baby from China? How is Miranda liking motherhood? Is Samantha still, uh,
keeping things interesting?
Those questions, no doubt occupying the thoughts of many "Sex and the
City" fans since the long-running HBO series ended in 2004, may finally
be answered -- in a much-talked-of but still unrealized feature film spun
from the show.
New Line Cinema is close to inking a deal to finance and distribute the
film in association with HBO, John Smith, a representative at New Line,
confirmed Thursday. Daily Variety reported the news Wednesday. Smith said
its report was accurate and did not provide further details.
The four principal actresses -- Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall,
Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon -- will reprise their roles. Michael
Patrick King, who executive-produced the series, is slated to direct.
The making of a "Sex and the City" movie has been bandied about since the
show left the air. There have been reports that the delay was due in some
part to Cattrall, who played the sex-obsessed Samantha Jones, asking for
a higher salary and creative input.

LOS ANGELES - "Transformers," director Michael Bay's screen
interpretation of the Hasbro toy line, rolled into theaters Monday and
quickly amassed $8.8 million in North America.
Those returns came from screenings that ran from 8 p.m. in 3,050 theaters.
Although the DreamWorks production played only evening performances, its
Monday number topped that of the day's No. 2 film, "Ratatouille," by more
than $1 million and more than doubled the day's grosses for 20th Century
Fox's competing action movie "Live Free or Die Hard."
Figures for "Transformers" first full day of performances on Tuesday --
when the film rolls into more than 4,000 theaters -- will be released on
Wednesday.

Top Emmy contenders leaked online

television show 'The Sopranos' pose during the 13th Annual Screen Actors
Guild Awards in Los Angeles, January 28, 2007. [Reuters]
An online leak about the Primetime Emmy Award finalists in the comedy and
drama series categories raised questions Monday about the security and
future of the Emmy voting process.
When TheEnvelope.com (http://www.theenvelope.com) posted the list of the
top 10 finalists in each category during the weekend, citing multiple
judges who were screening the series as sources, it also shed light on
this year's voting process.
According to the Los Angeles Times-operated site, the drama finalists are
ABC's "Boston Legal," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Lost"; NBC's "Friday Night
Lights" and "Heroes"; Fox's "House" and "24"; Showtime's "Dexter"; and
HBO's "Rome" and "The Sopranos."
The comedy finalists, according to the site, are ABC's "Desperate
Housewives" and "Ugly Betty"; NBC's "My Name Is Earl," "The Office,"
"Scrubs" and "30 Rock"; CBS' "Two and a Half Men"; HBO's "Entourage" and
"Extras"; and Showtime's "Weeds."
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which oversees the Primetime
Emmy Awards, declined comment on the accuracy of the lists. The final
five nominees in each category -- or six, if the vote is close enough --
will be unveiled on July 19.
It is unclear whether the academy plans to investigate the sources of the
leak. But in a statement, it said all Emmy judges are required to sign a
confidentiality agreement.
"The Primetime Emmy nomination process should not be compromised by
premature disclosure of nominations information prior to the announcement
of the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards nominees on July 19," the statement
read. "All television academy members who take part in the judging
process are asked to sign a confidentiality agreement; the Academy of
Television Arts & Sciences will not comment on any violations of that
agreement or on any speculative reporting of nomination data."
At least one network source was pleased that the lists of finalists were
leaked. The source, who did not wish to be identified, said the academy
should make it a policy to start announcing the top 10 finalists on its
own every year.
The leak could be linked to a change in the Emmy voting procedures this
year.
The finalists -- selected by the entire academy membership -- are being
screened in Los Angeles and New York by blue-ribbon panels consisting of
several hundred academy members.
One rule change this year ensured that all panelists would know all
series that made the cut as the top 10 in a certain category instead of
only a few apiece, as they did last year. That makes it more difficult to
keep the identity of the finalists under wraps. It remains to be seen
whether the academy will revamp the voting process again as a result of
the leak.

ENTERTAINMENT / Movies
Ex-`Grey's' star cites racism for firing
(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-29 08:30
LOS ANGELES - "Grey's Anatomy" star Isaiah Washington said racism was a
factor in his firing from the hit ABC series after he twice used an
anti-gay slur.
Washington, who initially used the epithet during an onset clash with a
co-star, told Newsweek magazine that "someone heard the booming voice of
a black man and got really scared and that was the beginning of the end
for me."
He tried to make amends by expressing remorse and volunteering to enter a
counseling program to understand how the confrontation got out of hand,
he told Newsweek.
"My mistake was believing that I would get the support from my network
and all of my cast mates across the board. My mistake was believing I
could correct a wrong with honesty and sincerity," he said in the
interview posted online Thursday.
"My mistake was thinking black people get second chances. I was wrong on
all fronts," he said.
His unwillingness to act like a submissive black at work was part of the
problem, Washington said.
"Well, it didn't help me on the set that I was a black man who wasn't a
mush-mouth Negro walking around with his head in his hands all the time.
I didn't speak like I'd just left the plantation and that can be a
problem for people sometime," he said.
"I had a person in human resources tell me after this thing played out
that `some people' were afraid of me around the studio. I asked her why,
because I'm a 6-foot-1, black man with dark skin and who doesn't go
around saying `Yessah, massa sir' and `No sir, massa' to everyone?
"It's nuts when your presence alone can just scare people, and that made
me a prime candidate to take the heat in a dysfunctional family," he said.
ABC declined comment Thursday. In its one public statement regarding
Washington, issued in January, the network said his actions were
"unacceptable."
Washington, who used the slur against co-star T.R. Knight during a
confrontation with Patrick Dempsey, repeated the word backstage at the
Golden Globes in January in denying the first incident. A public apology
to Knight and others followed.

Ice up your world
By Gan Tian (beijing today)
Updated: 2007-06-27 10:35
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of
a good fortune must be in want of... some ice in the summer. When the
season of sweat and swelter arrives, I usually go shopping with some ice
in my pockets to keep my legendary cool.
Plastic ice-cube tray
You can get these plastic ice-cube trays in any supermarket for 10 yuan.
Or 8 yuan if the gods are smiling. The reason I include them here is to
warn you, that if you are a man of taste, like me, you should never buy
these plastic things. This applies to women of taste as well.
Available: supermarket in town
Price: 8-15 yuan
Fish-bone ice-cube tray
So much more than a mere ice-cube tray! Each space has a shiny yellow
fish bone shaped thing in it. When you add water and freeze it, you get
an entire fish Popsicle. However, once you've sucked all the ice off,
you're left with a bone to pick. Just imagine that you are a sexy little
cat, girls.
Available: smoke.co.uk
Price: US$99.9
Korner snowman tray
It works like the fish bone tray, but the snowman idea certainly feels
much cooler. Of course, you should also note that the price is much more
reasonable, leading me to conclude that fish are a cut above snowmen in
our thrusting global market. Poor snowman.
Available: Korner.com
Price: US$29.9
Ice-cream lock
Seven colors to make ice-cream. Add water, some sugar, even some juice if
you want and stick the resulting mix into your fridge. Two hours later,
take it out and enjoy the icy goodness. Don't these things remind you of
the good old days?
Available: F/4, Huawei Shopping Center, Xidan, Xicheng
Price: 48 yuan
Halloween ice bucket
Doesn't this smile look like that same ghost that haunted you back around
Halloween? There are still months to wait until next Halloween comes
around, but it does't matter so long as this bucket can provide a ghostly
chill or two!
Available: F/5, Huawei Shopping Center,Xidan, Xicheng
Price: 99 yuan
Red ice-cube tray
It is okay, if you choose these, at least you have some taste. They claim
these ice-cube trays are made of some type of soft material that will not
harm your health. At least you can just bend it and the ice cubes will
pop out from the tray. What's more, the different shapes add to the
interest and fun factor, it's just that these products only come in one
color.
Available: No 54, Xinjiekou Nan Dajie, Xicheng
Price: 15 each
More ice buckets
These ice buckets have nice shapes and colors. One glance tells you that
they will cool everything in your house. Possibly your neighbor's too. If
you don't know which one to take hom just choose the purple one?- it was
good enough for Caesar, after all.
Available: Sone Shop, Xinjiekou Nan Dajie, Xicheng
Price: 69 yuan

In the crowded world of Sanlitun back street bars, A Lil High has big
plans. "The name, it's got nothing to do with smoking, it's about
buzz...and we're planning on maybe opening a couple more bars like
'Pretty High,'and 'Really High' says Tian, the manager. For now, though,
it's elbowing its way between Cox and the Pure Girl franchise.
Its drinks rank a step above PG ("we only use real deal alcohol," Tian
swears up and down) but at RMB10 for a ping of pijiu and pub goodies like
chicken strips and fries (RMB15) on offer, it could give Cox a run. It'll
at least draw in the hip-hop crowd. If you do stumble in, head straight
for the plush purple couches in the back room. And the hookah. You'll be
feeling more than a little high in no time.

Jackson says in a court deposition that the Rev. Jesse Jackson and
billionaire Ron Burkle gave him advice to help save him from financial
disaster when he was fighting child molestation charges. The Daily News
said in Sunday editions it reviewed seven hours of transcripts, finding
that the singer believed disloyal advisers took advantage of him

molestation in June 2005. [AP]
NEW YORK - Lawyers for Michael Jackson settled a lawsuit Monday brought
by a New Jersey financial company that was seeking $48 million.
The lawsuit by Prescient Acquisition of Hackensack, N.J., was settled
just as jury selection was set to begin in U.S. District Court in
Manhattan.
Terms of the settlement weren't released.
Steven Altman, a lawyer for Darien Dash, who owns Prescient, said Dash
was owed the money for helping Jackson refinance a $272 million bank loan
and secure $573 million in financing to buy Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE -
news).'s half of the Beatles' song catalog that Sony co-owned with the
pop superstar.
Jackson, 48, had claimed he never heard of Dash and didn't remember
signing an agreement.

The honour of being a member of the council has been conferred on Jolie
for her invaluable contribution to the advancement of charitable works
around the world.
She is now among former US Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter,
ABC's Diane Sawyer, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and journalist
Tom Brokaw who comprise in the membership of the prestigious think tank.
Jolie, already a UN Goodwill Ambassador, was nominated and recommended
for approval by the CFR membership earlier this year.
"Angelina Jolie is accomplished in her field and has demonstrated serious
interest in issues such as Darfur, international education and refugees,"
says People magazine quoted Lisa Shields, Vice President of
communications at CFR, as saying.
"As such, her profile fits very well with other young professionals we've
selected as the next generation of foreign policy leaders," she added.
In the recent publication of a magazine, Jolie has expressed her desire
to be remembered for her humanitarian work, not as an actress.
"When I die, do I want to be remembered as an actress? No." Esquire
quoted her as saying.
"I recently had a column published in a newspaper and at the end it
didn't say I was an actress. It said that I was a UN Goodwill Ambassador
- that's all. And I was really proud," she added.
The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is an influential and independent,
nonpartisan foreign policy membership organization founded in 1921.
Through its membership, meetings, and studies, it has been called the
most powerful agent of United States foreign policy outside the State
Department.
